Arduino LCD I2C Project-Visuino - VTM Systems Store

Direct Technical Summary Arduino LCD I2C Project. Connecting an I2C to an Arduino Uno is not difficult. Finding a sketch that allows you to display text is not hard either. But what I didn't know was that you could use the serial monitor to type your text onto the screen. I thought that this was worth sharing.

Frequently Asked Questions

I2C bus address discovery, contrast potentiometer calibration, Uno hardware pinouts, serial monitor text echoing, and workbench integration.

1. What is the default I2C address of a 1602 LCD backpack and how do you find it? +
Most 1602 LCD backpacks use a PCF8574 I2C expander chip, which defaults to address 0x27 (PCF8574T) or 0x3F (PCF8574AT). If your sketch initializes the wrong address, the display will light up with solid blue blocks and show no characters. To find the exact address, upload an I2C scanner sketch from VTM Studio Code Mode; it scans the bus and prints the detected hexadecimal address to the Serial Monitor.
2. Why does the 1602 LCD backlight turn on but display blank white boxes or no text? +
The onboard blue potentiometer on the back of the I2C backpack controls the LCD contrast voltage (pin V0). Out of the box, this potentiometer is frequently dialed to an extreme, rendering the text invisible or washing out the matrix into solid rectangles. Use a small flathead screwdriver to slowly rotate the blue potentiometer clockwise or counterclockwise until crisp, sharp characters appear against the backlit background.
3. Which Arduino Uno pins connect to the I2C LCD backpack? +
On the Arduino Uno (ATmega328P), the I2C bus lines connect to Analog Pin A4 for SDA (Serial Data) and Analog Pin A5 for SCL (Serial Clock), or to the dedicated SDA and SCL header pins located next to the AREF pin. Connect VCC to 5V and GND to Arduino GND. The PCF8574 backpack includes onboard 4.7kΩ or 10kΩ pull-up resistors to 5V, so external pull-ups on the breadboard are not needed.
4. How do you stream text typed into the Serial Monitor onto the 1602 LCD screen? +
In your Arduino sketch loop, poll Serial.available(). When incoming bytes arrive from the Serial Monitor or VTM Studio Console, read them with Serial.read() or Serial.readStringUntil('\n'). Clear the previous message with lcd.clear(), set the cursor to column 0, line 0 with lcd.setCursor(0, 0), and print the text string with lcd.print(). This enables real-time physical message display without re-flashing the microcontroller.
5. How does this I2C LCD project integrate with VTM Studio? +
This guide pairs with VTM Studio Reference Mode (for instant I2C pinout maps and character address offsets) and Code Mode (for flashing LiquidCrystal_I2C sketches and testing serial input). It also feeds live telemetry streams into Science Mode to verify sensor values side-by-side with physical LCD readouts.
